Lansing Chapter

There’s an old Chinese curse - “May you live in interesting times.” I don’t know what we did to make whomever mad, but this proved to be an interesting Sunday performance. It all started innocently enough, with a fairly normal warm-up. We were a little short on performers, but balanced pretty well. Then followed the three block walk to the performance tent. That’s when things started to go a wee bit “off.”As we started to get on the stage, one of the support jacks gave way, and one the stage started listing to port, so to speak.

We all figured it must be Don Horton’s fault, as it gave way as he entered. After a quick exodus, the support was repaired, and we went on with the show. The side walls of the tent had been removed to improve cooling airflow.

An “Interesting” Day at the Curwood Festival Performance

That plus a gusty 25 - 30 mph breeze did help keep things cool, but played havoc trying to hear the other sections

Also performing on the show were Sufficient Grounds, with Ben Ong subbing on tenor, and a patched together version of the Patch Chords, with Don Horton subbing for Larry Parker on Bari. Even the ride home had some eventful moments, with a VERY DARK cloud looming to the west and seemingly moving towards me at a high rate of speed. Instant deluge and winds that rocked the car even though I was in a 30 mph zone in south Lansing. That’s when I heard the civil defense sirens over the noise of the wind and rain. I never saw a funnel cloud although the weather people claim there was one, however there were several instances of tree limbs down in the road.

The Patch Chords are pleased to announce the addition of tenor Bud Burrill to their quartet, succeeding Roger Cahaney. Bud brings years of experience and talent to the Patch Chords. He joined the Society in 1967 as a member of the Battle Creek Cereal City Chorus. In 1978, he became a member of the well-known comedic quartet Harmony Hounds and sang with them for five years.

In 2004, Bud sang with the Brotherhood quartet which won the Pioneer District Senior Quartet Championship. Joining Don in this quartet were his brothers, Don, Dean and Dorn. Bud's "Maiden Voyage" with the Capitol City Chordsmen was the Patch Chords' performance as part of Owosso's Curwood Festival. Since Larry Parker was ill, Bud got to sing with fill-in bari Don Horton, an original member of the Patch Chords who seems to get younger and more energetic with age. For thePatch Chords, this performance was kind of the past and the future all rolled into one.
