Power Play

They've performed all over North America, and also recently in Germany. Notable Power Play performances include the Grande Old Opry and NBC's The Jane Pauley Show.

They’ve worn their gold medals with pride and represented the Barbershop Harmony Society with class and musicianship second to none. Their music has always demonstrated artistry and heart, which is built around family. For those of you new to the district or barbershop harmony, the group consists of a father, his two sons, and a nephew.   Jack Slamka, the father, sings bass and is a 35+ year member of the Society. He lives in Riley Twp., MI with his wife, Kitty. Michael, his son, sings lead and is a 25+ year member of the Society.   Mike lives in St.Clair, MI with his wife, Traci, and their three daughters Michaela, Mackenzi, and Madison.   Jack and Mike direct the Guardians of Harmony Chorus in Macomb County. Don, the nephew, sings tenor and is a 25 year member of the Society. He lives in Reading, MI with his wife, Staci and their daughter Holli. Don also directs the Town and County Chorus in
Hillsdale, MI. Mark, the other son, sings baritone and is a 20+ year member of the Society.   He lives in St. Clair Shores, MI with his wife, Jennifer, their son, Dylan and daughter Felicity. This quartet proves that the family that Plays (and sings) together stays together! There are just a very few quartets within our district that can claim to have sung together for longer.

Power Play holds a special place in my heart, being a long time member of the Guardians of Harmony. Don, Mike, Jack and Mark have performed on our chapter

by Rick Anderson, Pioneer M&PR

The end of an era is drawing near in the Pioneer District. As with all good things, Power Play will end its run as a quartet on February 16. 2008. Power Play formed in 1988, and won the Pioneer District quartet championship in the fall of 1989. They represented us in international competition 12 times, and attained medallist status in 2000 and 2001 when they were awarded a 5th place bronze medal in each of those competitions.
Then in Portland, Oregon they became the 2002 - 3rd place bronze medallists. As their crowning achievement, the quartet won the Quartet Competition held in Montreal Canada and became the 2003 International Barbershop Quartet Champions. This family foursome from Pioneer has been singing together for over 20 years.
shows numerous times to standing ovations, and I’ve experienced the pleasure of singing tags with them after rehearsals until the lights were turned off. I can’t imagine any group of guys who’ve done more for our Society and the Pioneer District than Power Play. They’ve brought us such joy and pride.

Joining Power Play for their Farewell Show will be other quartet icons of the Society – and all currently retired quartets: the 1986 champs Rural Route 4, 1991 champs The Ritz, 1993 Champs Gas House Gang, and 2002 silver medalists Uptown Sound. These have been some of the most influential quartets of our time. I hope you can join me and the Pioneer family on February 16 in St. Clair Shores, MI as we bid Power Play farewell.
